Sue Bond Jazz Singer

Sue-Bond-at-The-Powerhouse-in-Brisbane-600x405

Sue is a seasoned musician and highly acclaimed jazz singer who displays her love for Jazz music with her breezily infectious interpretations creating a unique and exciting repertoire.

When performing she delights her audience with sensitivity to lyrics, an impeccable feel for timing and an innate sense of swing.

An evening with Sue is always a memorable event as she weaves her way through an ever changing collection of jazz and bebop standards with her band, some of Australia’s finest jazz musicians.

Influenced by the greatest singers, including Ella Fitzgerald, Carmen McRae and Sarah Vaughan, Sue has developed her own authentic and spontaneous style to become one of the most compelling singers in Australia.

Sue launched her career on the cabaret circuit in Sydney in her teens and her success blossomed when she moved to Perth and became a sought after celebrity performer, appearing in a regular spot on the Jenny Seaton Show on Channel 7 Perth and many television events throughout Australia.

Support acts have included the Phillip Morris Big Band at the Perth Concert Hall with the band Nova Dreams, Spandau Ballet and Jackson Brown at the Perth Entertainment Centre, Kate Ceberano and Dragon to name a few.

Highlights include recording with the Queensland Theatre Company, appearing with Don Burrows on ABC television (The Burrows Collection), performing with her Quartet to Royalty at the Americas Cup Ball in Perth and working with such names as Kevin Hunt, Glen Shorrock, Tony Barber and Colleen Hewitt.

Sue first studied with Sydney voice coach and mentor John Forrest who was at the time working with some of Australia’s biggest stars including Colleen Hewett and John Farnham. She also studied at the Perth Conservatorium of Music and was voted best female vocalist at the Australian 1983 Music Awards.

Further studies have included a Paris sabbatical under esteemed renowned French voice coach Miroslava at Studio de Technique Vocale & d’Interprétation who helped her expand her already extensive vocal range, and develop more power and control over her voice.

Sue graduated with High Distinction and a Certificate in Music Studies/ Vocal Pedagogy at Queensland Conservatorium Griffith University.

“Sue Bond is firstly an excellent singer. Every song she sings is delivered with a fine understanding of the complete heart & soul of the music and lyrics. To work with her is a musicians delight” Bruce Cale, bassist, Dudley Moore Trio.

“Geez, she’s bloody good mate!” Graeme Bell AO, MBE”

“Sue is so solid with the vocals. Not many people can sing, or would even try to sing ‘Invitation’ and she just NAILS the melody. It’s wonderful.”
John Morrison, Australia’s top big band drummer-of Sue’s CD “In the Moment”

“In The Moment” is great jazz, the stuff that gets your brain, your ears and your limbs all buzzing at the same time. If you don’t agree check your pulse – you may be dead”. Andrew Tucker-CD review, Sunshine Coast Daily

“When it comes to straightahead swinging, Sue Bond’s track Drycleaner (from Des Moines) is the standout – thanks in no small part to her rhythm section of seasoned jazzmen – Geoff Proud (drums), Vince Genova (piano) and Bruce Cale (bass).”

Sue and her quartet/quintet are regularly invited to perform at jazz festivals and clubs, private and corporate events and weddings throughout Australia and New Zealand.

  • As an almost complete non-singer, I first started singing lessons with Sue, at the late age of 53. Added to this my range was extremely limited, as I never sang in my head voice. However it was my fortune to have chosen Sue to guide me along the path of vocal tuition, and during the last three and a half years, she has helped me develop into a competent hobby singer and amateur concert performer, with greatly extended range. Many sincere and heartfelt thanks Sue for your support and true professionalism along the path of vocal enjoyment.

  • I had always wanted to be a singer since I was a child. I would sit glued to Young Talent Time (that is showing my age) every Saturday …… sadly that childhood dream became lost with the demands of adulthood.

I continued to fantasize about whether I could sing and had always promised myself (like many of us do) that I would one day take singing lessons. Many times I had tried to call teachers but to my surprise I became too nervous to follow it through.

I moved to Noosa to commence a business and one sunny Sunday afternoon a duo was singing outside my store. I was so inspired by the singer’s voice that I approached her and asked if she knew of a singing teacher…. Of course this was Sue Bond and I took lessons straight away.

Sue not only taught me to sing she increased my self confidence in all aspects of my life.

I would say to anyone who is thinking of taking lessons with Sue, expect a warm and caring teacher who will encourage and allow you to realize your highest potential in a friendly but very professional manner.

Sue’s greatest attribute (after her amazing voice) is her passion for singing.

  • Learning to sing had long been a dream of mine and I had decided to take lessons as a birthday present to myself. I knew Sue Bond was the right teacher when she listened carefully during my first lesson to my reasons for feeling scared of signing in front of other people. Sue worked with me on building my confidence to sing; through teaching me breathing techniques and building my understanding of the anatomy of the voice. I especially enjoyed the song choices we made together and the feeling of accomplishment when I had learnt the lyrics and really ‘felt’ the song when I sang it. Sue’s relaxed and caring approach to teaching put me at ease and inspired me to practice and commit to learning each week. I now feel confident enough to join a choir and continue my singing journey for the rest of my life. A heartfelt thank you Sue.
